Bell Gardens, Los Angeles County
Bell Gardens was farmland into the 1930s, worked largely by Japanese families who raised vegetables for the Los Angeles market, and the gardens are remembered in its name. Inexpensive lots drew thousands of newcomers during the Depression, and the city incorporated in 1961. A large card club that opened beside the Long Beach Freeway in 1984 provides much of the municipal revenue.
